Get To Know Us: Meet Ixchel Suarez

Ixchel Suarez works on a piece called Maple Bark


Ixchel Suarez was born in Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico in 1966. A TMC Volunteer and docent for five years, Ixchel has worked with fibres for more than 30 years including dyeing, weaving, confectioning and printing textiles.

Among Ixchel’s many academic accomplishments are an MBA in Museums from Iberoamericana University, a BA in Graphic Design at Anahuac University, a post-graduate course at the Strzemiński Academy of Fine Art in Lodz, Poland, and a History of Art Diploma at the SIAC Institute. She was also a professor at Anahuac University for 13 years in the School of Design.

Ixchel has presented more than 20 solo shows and participated in juried and group exhibitions in Mexico, the United States, Poland, France, Panama, and Canada. Her work is shown in private and public collections.

She won a 2010 Stars Among Us award for Visual Arts, and is a recipient of the Ontario Art Council Visual Arts Mid-Career Grant 2011. Active in her community, Ixchel is a lecturer and workshop leader, president of the Oakville Handweavers and Spinners Guild, a member of the Canadian Tapestry Network, and is founder of Textil Creativo in Mexico City and the Oakville Arts Studio in Oakville, Ont.
