Jennie Wood’s Transfer Obsession

TMC Volunteer Jennie Wood is one of more than 20 artists showing work at the Gladstone Hotel as part of Hard Twist 6 – Obsession, an annual juried show of eclectic and exciting textile-based art. Her entry, “Transfer” is a conceptual mixed-media artwork piece.

Transfer, Jennie Wood, 2011

As a newcomer to Toronto it took a while to understand how transfers worked on the TTC system. So, I got into the habit of always taking one at the start of a journey – just in case! The resulting “obsession” of keeping transfer tickets has inspired a hanging which represents people commuting and transiting, endlessly moving from place to place within a system. This ceiling hung piece is designed to be semi-transparent so that, as viewers move around it, they become a part of the scene – albeit transiently – joining the two figures who are about to exit the frame. – Jennie Wood, designer, quilter and textile artist
