Barbara Rose & Connie Wente: TMC Volunteers of the Year
Barbara Rose and Connie Wente have been named TMC Volunteers of the Year.
Barbara, a former nurse, became a Reception volunteer in 2002. Reception is the first point of contact with visitors to the Textile Museum, and the volunteers help set the tone for a positive visit. Barbara has also managed scheduling and training new Reception volunteers.
Connie collects Grenfell Mats and was attracted to the Museum by her love of textiles. She started in 2006 as a volunteer in the TMC Shop on Wednesday evenings. Like Barbara, Connie took on the sometimes difficult task of scheduling, ensuring that 15 shifts a week in the Shop were filled by volunteers, training volunteers and filling in at the last moment when a shift was vacant.
Barbara and Connie received their awards at the Volunteer Association’s Annual General Meeting, held May 2 at the Museum. During the fiscal year ending April 30, 2012, about 150 TMC Volunteers worked more than 15,000 hours at the Museum. Volunteer Association chair, Pam Craig, has agreed to continue in the position for another year. We are currently looking for someone to fill the position of vice-chair.
Strand News is the online meeting place for members of the Volunteer Association of the Textile Museum of Canada. Our annual fundraisers, including the Textile Bazaar, support Museum programs and exhibitions.
